LAC 1522739 John Fredrick Roberts

John Fredrick Roberts, sent these pictures to the site,
and this is his story....

I joined the RAF on the 17-6-1941. I wanted to be an Air Gunner, but was told there were no vacancies at that time, but if I joined as a Ground Gunner I would have a far better chance of transferring when vacancies
where posted on the Sqn. notice board.

(Basic Training July 1941 and the Gun Crew)

I completed service at RAF Abingdon and RAF Benson. I was then posted to Hornchurch 122 Sqdn on the 16/9/1941. The Sqn was sent to Blackpool and kitted out with Tropical gear, and injections, but the Draft was cancelled.

(VE Day Germany No 2 Flt 2845 Sqn RAF Regiment)

I was posted to Castle Camp on the 3/1/42 and I am now in 2814 Sqn RAF Regiment, then on the 24/4/1946 it was changed to 2845 Sqn RAF Regiment.

Just prior to being demobbed from Hamburg. I was a Gunner/Driver, and had Hisparno cannons before Bofor Guns and supported the Canadian Army through France Belgium Holland and Germany.

Details from Sara Westwood

 William Herbert George Kitcher
