THE RAF ARMOURED CARS IN THE MIDDLE EAST 1921-1953
THE RAF REGIMENT IN THE UK, MIDDLE EAST,
MEDITERRANEAN AND NORTH-WEST EUROPE 1942-1946
Nigel Warwick, the author of the recently published
“Constant Vigilance. The RAF Regiment in the Burma Campaign” is
now gathering material for three further volumes of the Regiment’s
history to be written in the same style:
-
The RAF Armoured Car Companies/Squadrons in the
Middle East 1921-1953
-
The RAF Regiment in North Africa, the Middle
East, the Mediterranean and Italy 1942-46 (including Ground Defence
1940-41)
-
The RAF Regiment in the United Kingdom and
North-West Europe 1942-1946 (including Ground Defence 1939-1941 -
Battle of France and Battle of Britain)
I am seeking
reminiscences, diaries, anecdotes and memories of significant events or
personalities either serious, humorous or indeed the mundane from those
who served in these areas of operations. I want to hear your own
stories, your own perspectives of that time, which will be worked around
the official accounts. I would also welcome any photographs which will
be returned promptly. Material can be sent to, or contact made
with:

I have attached
a note that summarises ( above) the areas I am working on. My first
priority is the book on the RAF Armoured Cars in the Middle East
1921-1953 (mainly Nos 1 and 2 ACC/ACS). However, as we are fast losing
the World War 2 generation it is important I gather what I can on that
era as well as much as we can in the next few years.
I am keen to
make contact in particular with men who served in No 2 Armoured Car
Coy/Squadron in the Middle East post 1945. If you know any that served
in No 2 Armoured Car Company prior to 1945 then also let me know. They
are getting thin on the ground. I have talked to the members of the RAF
Armoured Cars Association which as given me some useful contacts. I am
interested in photos and most importantly personal accounts of their
experiences. If you have read my book “Constant Vigilance” you will see
that what brought it to life were the writings of the airmen who
described what it was like, how they felt and thought about events from
their perspective. A couple of paragraphs on what someone did on a
particular operation and how they felt can really bring events to life.
I have access to the Operations Record Books but it is important we get
the perspective from slit trench, drivers’ seat or turret level, so to
speak.
A second, and
no less important priority, are the chaps who were in the RAF Regiment
in the Mediterranean, Middle East, North Africa, Italy etc. Do you know
any who were in the Field Squadrons in North Africa and Italy? I am
particularly interested in those who were 2721, 2744, 2771, 2825 Field
Squadrons.
